The Cheap Jordan 4 was the first model in the series to go global. Widely distributed outside the United States. The IV also took the Cheap Jordan 4 brand to another level of visibility and pop culture influence. Spike Lee's "Do The Right Thing" featured the Air Jordan IV in an unforgettable scene that helped the shoe transcend the game of basketball.

Cheap Jordan 4 design

The Cheap Jordan 4s was the second straight shoe designed by Tinker Hatfield, released in 1989. Design-wise, it’s not too different from the 3, but it has a few additions that make it one of the most popular shoes in the line. The word "Flight" has been added just below the Jumpman logo. It introduced nubuck leather to the sneaker world for the first time. There are mesh components for added breathability and there are multiple areas of plastic.

About Cheap Jordan 4 History

The Cheap Jordan 4 (IV) is the fourth signature sneaker designed for Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan. It debuted in February 1989 during that year's NBA All-Star Game in Houston. The sneakers, which originally retailed for $110, were designed by Tinker Hatfield. This is Tinker’s second shoe for MJ, releasing in four colorways throughout the year: “White/Cement,” “Black/Cement,” “Military Blue,” and “Fire Red.”

The Cheap Jordan 4 shares many similarities with its predecessor, the Air Jordan 3 . It features visible Nike Air Max units, an enlarged tongue and “NIKE AIR” branding on the heel, but also introduces mesh on the upper and plastic lace eyelets. "Wings" to reduce weight. Hatfield's weight-loss principles are common in all of his designs — including basketball, running and training. The Cheap Jordan 4s was an instant hit upon its release, and the shoe is best known for "The Shot" - Jordan's infamous buzzer-beater against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Cheap Jordan 4 Arrives in Two Latest Colorways

The Cheap Jordan 4 didn’t return to stores until 1999, about a year after Michael Jordan retired from the Bulls. It returns in two original “White/Cement” and “Black/Cement” colorways, along with two “LS” (or Lifestyle) models that feature a Jumpman logo on the heel and leather panels in place of the mesh . This has led to significant growth in the popularity of Air Jordan 4 Cheap shoes as casual lifestyle footwear. The Cheap Jordan 4s became popular among sneaker collectors in the 2000s due to its design and rarity. The model wouldn't be released again until 2005, including a highly limited Cheap Jordan 4 "Laser" version, as well as the Cheap Jordan 4 "Thunder" and Jordan 4 "Lightning" versions in 2006.

For Fall 2006, Jordan Brand is bringing the sneaker back to the public eye in two more original colorways (a Mars Blackmon-inspired “Fire Red” and “Military Blue”) as well as a slew of new color options for men and women. While popular among Cheap Jordan 4 fans, many were dissatisfied with the lack of "NIKE AIR" logos and seemingly average quality such as cracked paint on the midsole and inaccurate toe shape. In 2016, Jordan Brand finally brought the original heel branding back to the shoe in the Cheap Jordan 4 “White/Cement.”

The Cheap Jordan 4 has been circulating regularly over the past decade in a variety of colorways and styles. Today, it remains one of the most popular Air Jordan models and is often cited as one of the best footwear designs of the Tinker Hatfield era.

As a key part of Jordan Brand's Spring 2022 lineup, the Cheap Jordan 4 has been released in a variety of upcoming colorways, the most notable of which is the "Infrared" colorway that will launch later this May. We can also expect to see a “Zen Master” and a women’s-only “Canvas,” all of which should tide us over until the release of “Military Black,” “Olive,” and “Canyon” later this year.
